A couple days ago I discovered something called Learning Battle Cards. It is a deck of cards with 108 different instructional methods and can be used to “introduce design thinking into the instructional design space”.
While this sounds super cool, $99 for a deck of cards is a little steep for me. Which is why I was excited to find a freebie on their site, a poster depicting the universe of e-learning.
As an e-learning developer, I hate it that most people just think that e-learning is a narrated PowerPoint with a quiz at the end (rolls eyes 🙄🙄🙄). E-learning can do so much more than that, and has endless possibilities to provide space for exploration, experimentation, feedback and reflection.
This poster organizes instructional methods in two ways – depth of learning (reminds me of Bloom’s Taxonomy) and purpose:
- Explain to me
- Let me explore
- Let me experiment
- Let me work with others
- Tell me how I am doing
- Support me
I like the poster and have it printed (+ annotated) because help me consider multiple approaches when designing a digital learning experience.
I also really like to look at the the entire deck of Learning Battle Cards for inspiration. Some methods are not listed in the poster for e-learning, but can definitely be tweaked to work digitally.
For example, Reflection (Rf)Â is something I implemented in a previous e-learning project on IT Security. Before the course starts, learners have to evaluate their current password habits by selecting check boxes. At the end of the course, their self-evaluation is presented to them, and they reflect on what they learned and how they plan to implement that.
Reflection is a great tool to help learners remember what they learned and attach meaning and personal relevance to the content!
Anyway, the possibilities are endless. Let’s keep expanding the e-learning universe! Cheers!
